Under-strength Heanor Town, without seven experienced members of their first team squad, but up a brave fight but were just unable to save a point in a thrilling Bank Holiday game at the Town Ground.

Quorn got off to the best possible start with two goals inside the first four minutes. Barely three minutes on the clock when Nick Hall over ran the ball after trapping it and left the door open for NICHOLAS GOOLD to stroke it into the bottom corner. And if that wasn’t bad enough, young full back Kyle Daley gave the ball away less than a minute later and Nathan Dale set up CALLUM THOMPSON to fire into the top corner.

Credit young Daley though. He did not let his error mar what for him was an encouraging full debut.

Heanor hit back and a hat full of goals looked on the cards when Thompson was caught in possession and Josh Craddock’s through ball sent JAY COOPER through the middle to round Taylor McMillan and bring Heanor back into the game.

Joe Naylor just failed to control an Alex Brown pass and toe poked the ball wide and McMillan took Greg Marriott’s cross off the head of Naylor as Heanor looked to level.

Just as the Lions looked to be getting on top CALLUM THOMPSON fired an unstoppable 30-yard shot into the top corner to restore the visitors two goal advantage.

The Lions brought off Joe Naylor after 32 minutes with Gary Conway going into defence and Nick Hall pushed up front.

Thompson, looking for his hat-trick, burst through but shot over the bar for Quorn, and Dominic Wilkinson put Jack B Warner through only for the youngster to fluff the opportunity.

Jack B Warner flashed a half volley inches over the bar as Heanor set out their intentions for the second half. The same player then saw a close range header saved by McMillan.

The ever dangerous Thompson caused a moment or two of problems for the Heanor defence at the other end when he jinked past three defenders and then clipped the ball over the bar as McCormack raced from his line.

Heanor forced a number of corners and young Daley was delivering them well from the right with McMillan catching one under pressure and punching another one out from under his bar.

However, it was almost game, set and match in the 71st minute when Ibrahim Kagbanda got down the right and put in a perfect cross for James Hicks, in front of goal and barely six yards out, to volley towards the top of the net. McCormack made the save of the season to prevent the Lions going three goals behind.

Daley appeared much more at home coming forward as Heanor pressed forward in the closing stages. One splendid through ball found Hall who cleverly pivoted to volley past McMillan only for the ball to hit the angle of bar and post and stay out.

JACK B WARNER gave Heanor hope with nine minutes left when he scored Heanor’s second, and the Lions had what looked a good shout for a penalty turned down when Wilkinson went to ground, but referee Simon Lane was close and had a good view and turned it down.

Thus Heanor lost for the first time in four games and was hardly the result they wanted to bring the Easter Holiday to a close.
