Heanor Town Reserves 3-3 Holbrook St Michaels Development

Heanor held after being 3-1 ahead

On a clear, cold, starlit night it was copycat time. Whilst the Reserves were throwing away a 3-1 interval lead, so were the first team on their visit to high-flying Coventry United.

Heanor made an enthusiastic start and had several shots blocked before a grand run up the byeline past several defenders by Connor Carlin set up BEN DAVIES-CIRIC for a close range finish on 17 minutes. Two minutes later OWEN PATRICK unleashed a great 35 yard shot which beat George Mehmet and dipped under the bar. It was a lead which Heanor deserved at this point. Stone chased a long ball and chipped just over the bar as Heanor continued to press. Heanor suffered a needless own goal in the 44th minute but hit back to regain their two goal lead in first half stoppage time when BRADLEY SHARP scored at the second attempt after Mehmet had saved his first shot.

Connor Carlin shot over the bar as the Lions began the second half strongly and then Heanor started to give away needless free kicks which allowed the Saints back into the game. From one, Power just managed to block the ball and the follow up from Ashley Roberts. At the other end Mehmet saved a low strong volley from Sharp which was fortunately straight at him. A Michael Jukka shot for Holbrook was pushed just over the bar by Power but it was another free kick which undid the Lions when SHANE BURROWS headed in after 67 minutes. Holbrook put on pressure for the equaliser and skipper Alex Babicki missed a glorious chance from an unmarked position in front of goal when he headed over the bar following a corner won as a result of yet another free kick. Heanor should have sealed the points on 74 minutes when Stone put Sharp through to round the goalkeeper and then shoot wide of an open goal. The Lions would pay for this miss. Jordan Samuel put in a header which Power in the home goal saved well, but with five minutes remaining MIKE SMITH headed in another free kick to complete the Holbrook come back. Morale of the story is, don’t give away free kicks if you can’t defend them.
