Leading up to The FA Vase tie this weekend each day we will be putting one of the squad in the spotlight.
Today we feature current top scorer, Gary Ricketts.
The old head of the squad, at nearly 40 years of age Gary stands head and shoulders above most players on the field. A gentle giant with a great history in the game, he is a role model for the younger players at the club with his desire to win and excellent work rate.
Ricketts started at Nottingham Forest where a car accident proved to put an end to the start of a promising career. He moved to Heanor, Arnold, Hucknall, Hinckley, Nuneaton Borough and Tamworth before Ilkeston FC came calling, it was with Ilkeston Town FC where he really settled and became a cult hero for the club.
When Ilkeston FC (formed 2011) secured his services during the summer of 2011 he became the first goalscorer for the club. His goal against Notts County in a pre-season friendly set the standard for his season where he won the Northern Premier League First Division South player of the year.
When Ilkeston FC released him, along with Heanor midfielder Matt Richards, he left with the record of being Ilkeston FC’s all-time top scorer, player with highest number of appearances and oldest player.
He’ll go a long way to beat Neil Grayson’s appearances for Heanor at the age of 48 but with the impact Gary has already had at Heanor, I’m sure he will be around for a long time to come.
