Match Reports:

Duffield Dynamo Cyclones U7’s vs. Heanor Town Hearts U7’s

A damp and dreary Mother’s Day morning saw the Hearts head into battle with another new opponent, the Duffield Dynamo Cyclones.

Despite a fully charged pre-match warm up from the magnificent Hearts, Duffield would take an early two goal lead, neither of which first half stopper Harvey could have done much about. The Hearts stuttering start was uncharacteristic, their usual accuracy and crispness of passing had gone amiss, and there seemed a reluctance to make a challenge on the Duffield players. It was a game which the absent Freddie would have relished, the physicality of our midfield general wouldn’t have gone a miss in this game.

The Hearts needed a goal to get going, and it eventually came when Kit threaded the ball through to Louie, who calmly took a touch before racing through on goal and rolling the ball expertly into the bottom corner. The goal was the most recent example of the huge strides this young man has made during these past few months with his composure and finishing.

The goal will also be remembered for another reason, due to the fact both players involved in the goal wore the same squad number today! Louie with his usual No.9 for the Hearts and Kit donning the same shirt number as he had turned up in his Saturday team strip! Thankfully, both kits are pretty similar therefore an ‘easy mistake to make’…

The Hearts were challenged to be a little more aggressive in the second half, but they were undone early on with two impressive Duffield goals. They then extended their lead to three, the referee penalising Charlie for a foul when he appeared to win the ball. Duffield lashed the free kick goal bound, forcing a great save from Lucas, however, the ball fell kindly to a maroon shirt and the Duffield player tapped home the rebound from close range.

Many teams at this age and at this stage of the game would accept the defeat and likely concede more, but these Hearts boys aren’t just any team…

They responded emphatically, the wizardry of Harvey out on the left was causing Duffield all sorts of problems, with Charlie switched to the right of midfield. He was finally getting joy running at the Duffield defence, with the in-form Oscar leading the attack.

Harvey found himself with a route through on goal and he made no mistake, finishing from just inside the area to grab a goal back for his side.

Harvey then turned provider as he sent a goal bound effort hurtling towards the Duffield stopper, who could do little other than palm down into the path of ‘fox in the box’ Oscar, who again showed his goal-scoring instinct with a cool side footed finish (I think he then attempted the ‘worm’ as his celebration, but that clearly needs some work).

Moments later Charlie charged down a lost ball and was gifted probably the most fortuitous of his impressive 30 goal haul for the season. The keeper kicking the ball straight at his shin, before rolling over the line.

A freekick just outside the box gave Charlie the opportunity to draw the game level, having pipped Harvey in a quick ‘rock, paper, scissors’ contest to take the set piece. The power was there but the accuracy wasn’t, as the shot flew agonisingly over the bar.

The comeback was still well and truly on though, and it was completed with Harvey’s persistence to hunt down the Duffield defence, as he finished with an almost carbon copy of Charlie’s earlier goal, showing the rewards available for pressing the opposition.

The Hearts were now well and truly ‘beating’. The desire from Chester to chase down every ball was once again to be admired, and he played a vital part in the move of the match. Charlie collected the ball in his own half before rolling a clever pass into the feet of Chester, who turned and threaded a wonderfully weighted pass through to Harvey inside the Duffield box. Harvey took a touch before nestling his strike into the far corner of the net to complete his hat-trick and secure a remarkable comeback victory for his team.

The scoreline was a bonus for the boys, but as always, most importantly was their performance and character, especially after going a few goals behind. Every single one of the Hearts boys put on a fantastic show, and I’m sure it helped to make Mothering Sunday that little bit more special.

Players of the Match:

Oscar Bramhall - getting better and better each week. The improvement in the past 3-4 weeks, both at training and on a Sunday morning, has not gone unnoticed. the work-rate and desire Oscar shows for his team is up there with the best, and he’s now getting the goals he deserves, which is what he loves to do! Well done, Oz.

Harvey Ward - once again showed his deadly finishing ability with a superb hat-trick. Harvey grabbed this game by the scruff of the neck and punished the Duffield opposition with his lightning quick feet and ‘Bale-esque’ wand of a left foot. Well done, Harv’s.

Heanor Town Thunder U7’s vs Springwood United Cyclones U7’s

Defeat for the Thunder but a great effort all around.

Springwood deserved the victory overall on the day, but there was no shame in defeat for the Thunder. Every one of the boys should be proud of their efforts.

The Thunder kept battling and got back in the game on several occasions, but in the end, Springwood’s quality showed through.

We go again next week.

Goal scorers - Jax, Spencer, Oliver Booker. 3 great finishes!

MOTM Oliver Burnell. For a battling performance and great improvement in net. Well done, Oliver.

Blidworth Bengals U9’s vs. Heanor Town Harriers U9’s

The Harriers made the long trip to face Blidworth Bengals, looking to register the first points in Division two.

Facing a strong side, the Harriers knew they would need to be at their best. Unfortunately, it turned into a difficult morning. A true classic example of the highs and lows of grassroots football.

From the off it was clear that the Harriers were not their usual competitive selves, giving their opponents too much time on the ball and not clearing our penalty area, resulting in 3 early goals. The Harriers would usually fight back from this type of setback but were unable to get a foothold in the game. Blidworth’s dominance added 2 more goals. It could have been three more but for a top draw penalty save from Leo Edge.

In the second half the Harriers tried to fight back. Alex and Stanley Taylor were as committed as ever in defence. In midfield, Captain for the day, Ashton Vallis battled gamely against players twice his size, backed up by Kaiden Charlton and Charnley Bolton. Harry Haslam got the ball down and played some nice passes and looked more composed in this unsure team performance. In attack, Alin Dragu and Louie West tried to make some forward runs, but found Blidworths defence a formidable outfit.

As the game went on, the Harriers changed formation pushing players higher up the pitch, leaving defender Riley Thacker exposed at the back, but to Riley’s credit, he battled on and made some great tackles, even when outnumbered at times.

Blidworth added two more goals to round of a very dominant performance. Credit has to go to our opposition. They played at the peak of their game and fully deserved the win. Despite the scoreline, the Harriers continued to fight and try their best. This was just one of those games. Grassroots football is all about learning. Winning, loosing, drawing games is all part of the process. The Harriers are made of strong stuff and will bounce back. Heads up, Harriers. We go again.

MOM- Close one between Riley Thacker and Harry Haslam. Riley just edged it with his brilliant attitude when asked to defend on his own, Well done, Riley.

The Harriers are proudly sponsored by TC Harrison JCB. Thank you for your support.

Heanor Town Hurricanes U9's vs. AFC Chellaston Rams U9's

It was a wet Sunday morning down at the Racecourse for the Hurricanes this week, against a strong Chellaston Rams team.

The Hurricanes held their own for large parts of the game, showing lots of positives and real promise, but as was the case when these two teams met earlier in the season, over the full 50 minutes, Chellaston were testing opposition and played some excellent football.

The first half was close, with both teams creating chances. Chellaston managing to score a few with good finishes.

Elijah Graham put in a good shift first half but unfortunately had to be withdrawn due to illness.

Charlie Colson gave his all in goal but was exposed to some good moves, making a few decent saves throughout though, and Tyler Higgins and Finley Shaw both put in a shift between them at the back and helped cut out several moves, but Chellaston were impressive at finding space and created a number of opportunities with simple passing, which caught the Hurricanes off guard.

Heanor pulled one back through Jenson Fletcher, with a nice finish after a hard press from both Jenson and Will Johnson created the opportunity.

The second half was a bit more challenging and whilst Heanor created some quality moves to create chances, there was a short spell where everything Chellaston did seemed to result in a goal for the away side, which put the game beyond Heanor’s reach, but, and most importantly Heanor kept their heads up and kept on fighting right to the end.

Max Appleby was out on the left for Heanor and came close to scoring with a good testing effort that the Rams keeper somehow kept out. Will was close to converting also but just saw his effort glide past the wrong side of the post, and Jenson Fletcher saw another effort come off the post.

Jobie Edmonds-Jackson, out last week through illness came back into the fold and showed endless running and some simple distribution of the ball in the middle of the park. Jenson Harrison, also back from a long stint out due to illness, didn’t stop running the whole game, getting both backwards and forwards, sending some nice passes forward.

It was certainly a testing week for Heanor, and in difficult wet conditions, but they showed real fight and determination to keep going and found a way to stop Chellaston in their tracks to ensure a tight finish to the game, well played Hurricanes.

Supporters Player – Jenson Harrison, didn’t stop running through out and showed some good attacking and defensive play. Well done, Jenson.

Coaches Player – Jobie Edmonds-Jackson, put in a solid shift and was keen to play even though had been feeling unwell in the week leading up to the game. Well done, Jobie.

Heanor Town Comets U10’s vs. Mickleover '95 Thunderbolts U10’s

A cold and wet Mother’s Day morning saw the Comets face the Thunderbolts. Earlier in the season, the Comets took the victory, but knew that they’d face a great challenge from their opponents.

The starting lineup for the Comets went with our shot stopper Isaac Swindell in goal, with HHC, and Blaine Walker starting in front of him in defence. Theo Henshaw started in that lone midfield role with Olan Brown on the right wing, Sonny Jackson on the left wing and John Rutherford in front of them playing as our striker playing a 2-1-2-1 formation. Waiting patiently on the bench was Kian Tipton and George Martin ready to make their impact when needed. Unfortunately, The Comets were without Harry Peacey, EM, and Jack Hobster, who were missing due to illness and being unavailable.

The game started and it was a very fiery start to the game from both sides with tackles flying in everywhere. HHC and Blaine had some work to do early on as the Thunderbolts looked very calm on the ball spreading the ball out wide and working their way through the gaps testing Isaac with some early shots. Theo was working extremely hard in the middle chasing everything down and making some fantastic tackles winning the ball back. 11 minutes into the game and Sonny picked up the ball on the left and switched it to Olan on the right who played the ball to John who hit a wonderful effort seeing the ball beat the keeper only to be kept out by the crossbar.

After a very energetic start to the game Kian replaced Theo in the lone midfield role and George replaced John upfront. With only 2 subs today, the coaches knew rotation was going to be key for the Comet's. The Thunderbolts were looking excellent on the ball, stringing together some lovely passes, and finding the gaps in our Comets defence. 15 minutes in and a lovely through ball from the Thunderbolts found their striker who was through on goal, he calmly took the ball to the left taking the ball around Isaac who come to claim it but couldn't quite get it. A shot was fired towards goal and Sonny made a fantastic goal line block, but unfortunately the rebound was followed up and the Thunderbolts forced the ball into the back of the Comets net putting them ahead.

The Goal fired the Comets up and straight from kick off Kian found Olan on the right wing who beat his man for pace and fired an outstanding shot towards the Thunderbolts goal which was brilliantly saved and tipped over for a Comets corner. Sonny delivered a wonderful ball into the box, but yet again, the keeper was excellent in calmly catching it. The Comets were defending well and some of the passing going forward was wonderful at times. With half time approaching, a long ball from HHC found George who played the ball back to Olan who hit another tremendous shot this time beating the keeper only to he denied by the crossbar yet again. The half time whistle blew, and the Comets had work to do.

A couple of changes at half time and Theo came on to support Kian in the midfield while Sonny had a rest and John came on to play right striker giving Olan a rest. The Comets now playing a 2-2-2 formation.

This game was very much end to end football with both sides creating some excellent chances. The Thunderbolts looked very dangerous every time they were attacking and another through ball found a gap in the Comets defence finding the Thunderbolts striker who hit a brilliant shot which was just too high for Isaac who got his fingertips to it but couldn’t stop it from going in the back of the goal putting the Thunderbolts further ahead after 28 minutes.

The Comets still weren't giving up and were still creating plenty of chances themselves, firing shot after shot at the Thunderbolts keeper who was simply outstanding today saving everything and most definitely keeping his side in front. A few mistakes from the Comets as they were diving in to try and get the ball, opened up space for the Thunderbolts to fire a couple of shots themselves, but this time it was Isaac’s turn to make some brilliant saves, some strong defending from Blaine at the back and some strong tackles too were keeping out the Thunderbolts attack.

An excellent bit of football down the right from the Thunderbolts and a great block again from Blaine gave the opposition another corner, the corner was swung in and it was collected by Isaac who played a brilliant long ball up the pitch, the ball found the feet of John who made a wonderful powerful run down the middle before finding the feet of George and with a lovely bit of footwork he managed to calmly take the ball around the keeper before slotting the ball into the back of the net, pulling a goal back for the Comets after 37 minutes. This sparked even more life into the Comets, and Theo and Kian were working so hard in midfield chasing everything down and winning some very strong tackles, John was still giving it absolutely everything tracking back brilliantly to help out defending and making some excellent powerful forward runs when attacking.

With the game being so energetic and the Comets working so hard it was time for Sonny to replace John on the right and Olan to replace George on the left, trying to mix things up a little bit to try and find the equaliser. Time was running out for the Comets and the game was still very much end to end, but play was starting to look in favour of the Comets. Some excellent dribbling runs from Sonny and some lovely one-two football with Theo opened up some space in the Thunderbolts defence with Sonny having another great shot which was terrifically saved again by the Thunderbolts keeper. Olan was still working hard on the left making some very quick and powerful runs on the left and delivering some great balls into the box but unfortunately the Comets just couldn't quite get onto the end of it.

Time very much against the Comets now and John came on for the last few minutes into a new role for him replacing Kian in midfield and forming a partnership with Theo. The Thunderbolts attempted to put this game to bed, but the defending from HHC and Blaine was great as the kept clearing the lines for the Comets time and time again, one last attack from the Comets came to nothing and the final whistle blew. The Comets just falling short and losing this great match.

The match was won by an outstanding performance from the Thunderbolts keeper, who got the admiration from the Comets coaching team congratulating him at the end of the game for his amazing performance. It would have been a different story with a full-strength Comets team allowing those extra options, but the effort and determination from the Comets available was outstanding today. They never gave up, with some key mentions needed. HHC and Blaine both played the full match, a first for the pair who worked together really well. John had to put all his energy into the match, playing as a striker, winger, and central midfielder throughout. Olan switching his game to mix up the tempo, and Sonny taking some damage from tough, but fair, challenges from opponents much larger than him, not that you’d know from our Spud getting the better of his battles overall. George helped himself to his nineth goal of the season whilst Kian, Theo and Isaac all demonstrated their key roles within this squad.

Supporters Player - Blaine Walker

Managers Player - John Rutherford

Blaine was very solid in defence for the Comets today, making some excellent tackles, some great defensive blocks and some fantastic clearances. Also, his defending at set pieces and corners were brilliant, showing his improved strength. Well done, mate.

John had an excellent game today playing upfront making some brilliant powerful runs taking on the Thunderbolts defence time after time and getting himself an assist with a lovely pass to George. Some excellent shots, one of them hitting the crossbar and was unlucky not to get himself another goal. When John came on into an unfamiliar midfield role, he was excellent at winning the ball back and playing some great forward passes. Well done, mate.

A big thank you to our parents and supporters and a massive thank you to our sponsor Matthew Walker from the whole of the Comet’s family.

Heanor Town Hawks U10's vs. Spondon Rovers Galaxy U10’s

The Hawks just missing that little spark.

Heanor Town Hawks were up against tough opponents in Spondon Rovers Galaxy. The game started at a fast pace with both teams eager to get themselves in front. Both the Hawks and Galaxy were giving their all and there was little separating the two sides.

With plenty of football being played, along with a bit of argy-bargy between the two sides fighting for the first goal was always going to be crucial in this match, and unfortunately, it was the Galaxy who pounced and capitalised.

For all their efforts and hard work, the Hawks went in narrowly trailing at half time. The second half was pretty much more of the same with both teams going toe-to-toe and leaving it all out there on the pitch.

A scrappy free kick saw Spondon double their lead and knock the wind out the Hawks. Then, a quick counterattack at the end put the game to bed with the score line flattering the opposition. Another game where the Hawks can feel a little unlucky and another match Spondon knew they were in until the final whistle.

Well done, Hawks, another really good team performance. Onwards and upwards as ever.

This week’s MOTM goes to Rex Reed, who is a vital part of this Hawks team. I’ve asked him to give that little bit more to the team and this lad has truly delivered. He’s looked a different player these last few games and I’m sure once the first goal comes the flood gates will open. Well done, mate. Keep up the hard work.

Ravenshead Reds FC Youth Girls U12’s vs. Heanor Town Diamonds U12’s

It’s been five long weeks since the Diamonds last took to the pitch thanks to some terrible wet February weather! They were finally back in action today and travelled to Mansfield to face Ravenshead Reds in the first round of the plate trophy.

It was a cold and wet morning, but the pitch was in a good condition despite the rain. The Diamonds lined up with Jodie in goal, Aaliya, Tammy, and Kelsey made up the defence. Avah, Kath, Cara, and Izzy across the middle with Lucy up top. Lois and Amelia ready to come off the bench.

It was a very slow start from both teams in the opening ten minutes. The Diamonds were clearly feeling a bit rusty from the extended break! Izzy did win a free kick midway inside the Ravenshead half which she delivered into the box with pinpoint accuracy, but the Diamonds were still asleep and failed to capitalise on the loose ball and allowed the Ravenshead defence to clear their lines.

The Diamonds did seem to listen to the shouts from the sidelines to wake up as Lucy broke down the left-hand side and rattled the post with a powerful effort, the ball fell back to her, but she couldn’t find the net from the rebound!

The momentum was with the Diamonds as they won a corner a few minutes later, Izzy with a fantastic delivery into the box, but once again the Diamonds were too slow to react and failed to make the most of it.

Cara, who had so far played her best football of the season, found Lucy with a lovely little chip over the Ravenshead defence that sent Lucy free in acres of space, but the linesman spoilt the party and raised the flag for offside. The deadlock was still to be broken. Amelia and Lois were introduced for Avah and Kath midway through the first half.

For the next ten minutes, the Diamonds seemed to slow the tempo and allowed the Ravenhead wide players space as they looked to trouble the Diamonds defence but the back three held well and cleared their lines, but the ball came back at them as quickly as it was cleared so they had to stay switched on!

Just before the break, Aaliya ran onto a loose ball and found Izzy with a fantastic pass who made no mistake and rifled the ball over the Ravenshead keeper to put the Diamonds ahead. Great assist and finish!

Unfortunately, the Diamonds couldn’t see out the first half with the lead intact as they allowed Ravenshead to capitalise on a loose ball from a poor clearance and finish with power and accuracy that gave Jodie no chance. The half time whistle blew with the scores level.

The second half started with a much better tempo than the first, with most of the play in the middle of the park. Cara continued her form from the first half with a solid midfield performance as did Tammy as she organised the defence well to keep the Ravenshead attack quiet.

It took twenty minutes of the second half before the Diamonds finally retook the lead. Lucy picked up the ball just inside the opposition half, skipped over one challenge, rounded another defender, and neatly slotted the ball home! Advantage Diamonds.

Much like the first goal, the Diamonds almost found themselves pegged back again had it not been for a fantastic diving save from Jodie. A corner was delivered into the box that rattled around until it rolled out of the box and was struck with a lovely curling shot that Jodie was equal to as she got down quickly and parried the ball the safely! Match winning save!

The tie was settled with a few minutes to play as Lucy once again picked up the ball just inside the Ravenshead half, left two defenders in her wake, and beat the keeper with a lovely finish into the top corner! Game over!

Tammy was awarded parents player of the match for her solid defensive display with Cara collecting the managers player of the match for her tireless performance.

They are capable of much better, but it was a good overall performance from the Diamonds, that progresses them into the next round of the plate trophy! Well done, Diamonds!

With special thanks to ‘Matthew Walker’ who proudly sponsor the Diamonds.

Nottingham FC Youth Girls U14’s vs. Heanor Town Tornados U14's

First and foremost, a very Happy Mother's Day to all the Tornados mums, past and present.

As coaches, on the back of International Women’s Day, we’d like to highlight that at times we don’t celebrate our girls enough. That they are a girl’s football team in a domain dominated by boy’s teams. By showing up each week they are removing potential barriers, inspiring other girls to get involved, and are helping to shape women’s football for now and the future. We’ve already seen this happen as Heanor Town now have multiple age groups for girls to play football. I think this is a really important success story for the Tornados, and definitely worth celebrating!

The Tornados made the short journey to Melbourne Park, looking to build on last week's excellent second half showing with a near enough full squad available. Grace C was ill and sadly Layla has left the team, but all the other players were chomping at the bit to get playing.

Julia was in goal with Evie, Issi, Grace L, and Eva at the back. Captain Scarlett, Skye, and Lilli were the midfield whilst Nelly, Esme, and Sharna were up top. Sienna, Flick and Freya ready to come off the bench when called upon.

The Tornados were quick out of the blocks and Sharna pounced on a rebound from the keeper’s initial save to poke the ball home. A great reward for her tenacity, but the less said about the knee slide celebration the better!! Nottingham Youth came back at the Tornados and were unlucky to have a goal chalked out for offside. This woke the Tornados up for the remainder of the half

The defence were solid with Eva continuing her impressive left back role, Grace and Issi clearing everything, and Evie again solid to keep the attacks to a minimum. The midfield was stringing passes together, and the forward balls by Lilli, Skye, and Scarlett created chance after chance which saw Sharna score two more, and Nelly power home as well.

Flick, Freya, and Sienna came on which allowed Scarlett to push up and she made no mistake when she nicked the ball off the defender to slot it past the keeper to give a healthy half time score, and it was one that didn't flatter the Tornados. Julia, whilst not having much to do, was excellent with her distribution creating several good chances for her team.

During the half time talk, the team were reminded that the game was far from over and were instructed to keep focused.

Into the second half and the team certainly didn't let their levels drop. Sharna and Esme linked well all game and it was Sharna who got one more with neat finish. Lilli and Freya kept on winning the ball back and Freya slipped Sharna in with a beautiful through ball for her to score one more. Flick gave the home team all sorts of problems with her strength and passing with Sienna and Issi showing their versatility by playing in several positions throughout the game.

Scarlett won a free kick on the edge of the box which she then took and scored a sublime effort for the pick of the goals. Nottingham Youth kept on going though and got one back via a corner which they deserved as they never gave up. Skye continued on from her impressive debut to play some lovely stuff whilst the defence were solid throughout. Grace having her best game of the season with Evie, Issi, Sienna, and Eva all excelling and even pushing forward looking steady on the ball.

The game then became the Nelly show. She first put in the corner that the Nottingham defender was unfortunate to put past her own keeper, and then scored four goals all of which were most impressive. She once again was the player who most defences have feared for the past five years! The final dominant score was what the effort and desire the Tornados showed was fully deserved, and the coaches hope this can really kick-start the season for this team.

It also shows what fresh legs can do when a good number of the players are available. All the outfield players were able to have a rest and that was also key to the hard running performance.

Coaches’ player - All of them. No way an individual could be selected today. This was a proper TEAM performance and that had to be recognised.
