Match Reports:

Heanor Town Hearts U7's vs. Alvaston DFC Charlton U7's

Following an impressive result and performance the previous week, the Hearts were given the opportunity to continue the high standards set against possibly the toughest test of the season, a well organised and clinical Alvaston side.

Fresh in the mind was the previous encounter between the 2 sides, with Heanor determined to display a more resolute and battling performance.

This was clear to see from the first whistle, the Hearts boys battling for everything in a very frantic end to end game. Somehow, the first 10 mins remained goalless, with Louie staying composed and clearing his lines when needed. Lucas was, as always, absolutely solid, not allowing any space or shots to the Alvaston forward players. The link up play between Kit, Harvey, and Freddie was reminiscent of a prime Xavi-Busquets-Iniesta, breaking the lines with some lovely intricate passing.

The deadlock was eventually broken when a looping ball squirmed its way through the goalkeepers’ hands at his near post, giving Alvaston the lead. This was quickly followed, although what could have been considered against the run of play, by a further two goals for Alvaston. Chester was introduced and wasted no time asserting his physicality and speed, causing the Alvaston left back huge problems. Between Harvey and Chester, the Alvaston backline was not given a minute’s peace, who struggled to handle the quick tricky feet of the two.

The goal of the day, however, belonged to the Hearts. The ball was played out from Louie into the feet of Lucas, who showed his cool composed side when he strolled forward with the ball, before releasing Kit down the right wing. Kit took the ball under his spell and played a beautifully weighted pass across the box into the path of Freddie, who took a touch before slotting the ball home into the bottom corner. No less than the Hearts deserved.

The second half very much followed suit, end to end with the game finely balanced. Kit, who had taken over the goalkeeper duties from Louie, pulling off a couple of worldies, which seems to be a regular occurrence when he drops into this role. One in particular, saving a close range shot and then tipping the point-blank range follow up onto the bar.

Louie, Chester, and Harvey continued to break forward, putting Alvaston on the back foot. Once again, against the run of play, Alvaston showed their ruthless side dispatching a further 4 goals, of which the Hearts could do very little about. Most teams at this point would let their heads drop. However, the Hearts never once gave up and continued to play football. The newly introduced short corner routine caused lots of problems for the Alvaston defence.

Freddie was reintroduced into a more defensive role, which once again highlighted his versatility with a commanding performance. Lucas was shifted into a more attacking position, which was so close to paying dividends. After some lovely passing between Harvey, Chester and Louie set Lucas through, firing agonisingly wide of the post.

Further opportunities presented themselves to the Hearts, Harvey, and Lucas, going close on numerous occasions, Alvaston under relentless pressure from the Hearts team.

Unfortunately, this pressure did not reap any rewards with the referee blowing for full time.

Man of the match - Freddie Matthews - always works tirelessly for the team, a really intelligent player who can comfortably play in either an attacking or defensive position. Fully deserved his goal today, which was slotted away like a young Alan Shearer.

All in all, the Hearts gave a massive account of themselves against arguably the strongest team in the division. The old cliche of the scoreline doesn't reflect the performance has never been more applicable than it was for this game. The desire, work rate, battling, and quality in possession were clear for all to see, and on any other day, the scoreline would have been much closer. Every week, the boys improve as such that they are proving they deserve to be in the division where they currently reside. The Hearts can feel a little unlucky with the scoreline as the performance warranted at least something from the game. Top class performance from every single player. The Heanor Town Hearts Ultras were in fine form also, encouraging from the opening minute until the final whistle.

Heanor Town Thunder U7's vs. AFC Chellaston Griffins U7's

The Thunder back to their best!

The Thunder started the game flying with great work pressing from the front. Chellaston couldn't settle on the ball as a result.

Chance after chance fell to the Thunder boys, and they took the lead through Frankie with a poacher’s goal. Frankie and Louie extended the lead with great goals on the break.

There was great work from all involved today, effort levels were increased in comparison to recent weeks and the Thunder were all brave in wanting the ball and doing the hard work to win the ball back, typified by Oliver Booker pouncing on opposition goal kicks and working his socks off.

The Thunder got their 4th late on in typical never say die fashion. Roux won the ball in the opposition box before striking past the keeper.

Man of the Match - Oliver Booker.

Heanor Town Titans U8's vs. West Bridgeford U8's

The Titans were raring to get back into action this weekend after last week’s strong performance.

We welcomed new signing Hasan to the squad today for his first game with the Titans.

The Titans got off to a flying start with Hasan on the left, causing problems and nearly scoring with our first attack, but a great save from the keeper denied and opening goal.

The Titans never stopped from the first to the last whistle with strong performances all over the pitch from the GK to the attackers.

The first of the 3 Man of the Match awards today was Hasan. For his debut, he was calm and collected on the ball, always looking to create and drove the team forward. He was always an option for his teammates.

The other 2 Man if the Match awards were for Podge and Noz. Different game for these two today, who worked their socks off to win the ball back and keep the pressure on. Noz was pressing from the front as well as out wide with his never give up attitude was brilliant. Podge covered virtually every blade of grass to win the ball back for his team and came close with a great free kick.

Big Charlie played a slightly different role slotting in the second half at CB. He was top draw and also unlucky not to score when the post denied him.

Little Charlie is growing week on week with confidence and strength, also unlucky not to score but again the post denying him.

Jude and Jacob continued their good form from the last week, neither gave up and made some great interceptions and worked their socks off.

Seths played both at the back and midfield and was strong from start to finish. Always backing his teammates in pressing the ball and calm on it when he had it.

The skipper today, Sam, drove the team forward like he always does from the front. He pressed to win the ball back and was unlucky not to score, but he never gave up and led the team brilliantly.

ON in goal is growing in confidence, which you can see game on game. His handling and shot stopping were good again and is staring to grow. You wouldn’t believe it was his first season with the team.

Man of the Match - Hasan, Podge, and Noz.

Castle Donnington Tigers U9’s vs. Heanor Town Harriers U9’s

The Harriers returned to action after the festive period with an away tie in the cup at Castle Donnington. With both sides finishing runners up in their respective leagues, the Harriers knew they would be up against strong opposition.

From the off, the Harriers were on the front foot, stringing together a lovely move. Charnley Bolton squared the ball for Riley Thacker, who shot just wide. The Harriers continued to look like they would break the deadlock, pressing forward on several occasions. Chances came and went.

Kaiden Charlton was unlucky not to score twice running into the opposition box with great runs but was just unable to finish the move off. Credit to Castle Donnington. They were playing their part in an entertaining game, both sides matching each other's physical edge.

Towards the end of the first half, the Harriers were nearly punished for not taking their chances when Castle Donnington sprung on the counterattack and went through on goal. In Leo Edge, the Harriers have a top keeper who held his ground and pulled off a brilliant one on one save. At half time, the Harriers were encouraged to go and seal the game and make their dominance count. Another great move involving Harry Haslam and Kaiden Charlton put Alin Dragu through on goal to unleash a brilliant finish to finally put the Harriers in front. This was a trademark finish from Alin. A great goal!

Castle Donnington continued to compete, but the Harriers were still controlling the game. Our defence was marshalled brilliantly by Alex and Stanley Taylor, both sniffing out any danger, giving the Harriers the platform to press higher up the pitch.

In midfield, the Harriers showed their class, full of running and brilliant tackling from Ashton Vallis and Riley Thacker, as well as showing their class with the ball. Harry Haslam showed some great touches beating a few players and looking for the key passes and Kaiden Charlton with his powerful driving runs.

The Harriers adopted a slightly different shape, with Charnley Bolton operating as our target man striker. This proved to be a great move as Charnley held the ball up brilliantly, bringing others into play. The Harriers pressure finally paid off, and we sealed the tie through Ashton Vallis, who’s sheer determination put him through to score with a nice little finish to seal the tie.

This was a very accomplished performance from the Harriers. Controlling the game and playing some lovely quick passing football, backed up by the usual Harriers Hard work and determination.

We march on to the quarter final!

MOM- Charnley Bolton. Playing out of position, Charnley showed a football knowledge above his years, playing the role exactly how the coaches asked him to and showed some great touches and great use of the ball. Well done, Charnley.

The Harriers are proudly sponsored by TC Harrison JCB. We thank you for your continued support.

AFC Mackworth Tigers U9's vs. Heanor Town Hurricanes U9's

The Hurricanes had a threadbare squad this week, missing both goalkeeper and leading goal scorer through illness, but the lads put in an excellent shift to get, in the end, a decent result against a full strength Mackworth team.

The first half started with a lot of pressure from Mackworth, but all dealt with very effectively by Jenson Harrison and Tyler Higgins at the back, who didn’t let much through with some excellent last-ditch tackles along the way, any loose balls that made their way through being swept up nicely by stand in first half keeper Max Appleby, who also made some good saves.

Will Johnson was up top for the Hurricanes offering some solid hold-up play and enabling wingers Ellis Bestwick and Jenson Fletcher to get on the ball, as the Hurricanes looked to open up the Mackworth defence.

The deadlock was broken when the Hurricanes earned a free kick on the edge of the box, Jenson Fletcher putting a fierce ball into the danger zone which saw it nestle into the back of the net via the Mackworth defence and finally Jobie Edmonds-Jackson, to put Heanor in front at the halfway stage. A reward for Jobie’s relentless running in the middle of the park throughout.

With no substitutes, Heanor had to recharge at half time and go again in the second half.

Tyler Higgins stepped into goal, and Max Appleby slotted into defence. Both Max and Jenson Harrison showed some good long-range distribution to help Heanor put Mackworth under pressure. It was looking fairly comfortable for Heanor before some fresh legs from Mackworth helped them sneak in behind to equalise with a good finish and they quickly followed it up with another goal from a corner, it could have been more too were it not for some excellent saves from Tyler.

The Hurricanes were determined though and kept going having stifled the Mackworth pressure and it was some excellent play out on the wing by Ellis Bestwick, who chased a lost cause in the corner, keeping the ball in and then delivering a sublime ball into the path of Jenson Fletcher who converted into the back of the Mackworth net with the help of a small deflection, to make the game level once again.

There were opportunities for more goals from both sides, with Tyler denying Mackworth once again and Ellis forcing a solid save from the opposition keeper late on, in addition to Will being unlucky not to convert a chance in the dying seconds - but all in all, an excellent effort from Heanor who kept going to the end, a fair result on the day.

Parents Player – Jenson Harrison, loads of running throughout and was everywhere, kept it solid at the back with some good distribution. Well done, Jenson.

Coaches Player – Tyler Higgins, some excellent last-ditch tackles and good passing in defence and some great saves when in goal. Well done, Tyler.

Heanor Town Comets U10's vs. Shelton Rams U10's.

Another cold and frosty morning, and the Comets were back in action looking to continue their fine form. Today's game started with Isaac Swindell in goal with Blaine Walker and John Rutherford in front of him in defence. Starting in the Comets midfield were the duo of Harry Peacey and Theo Henshaw. Today's Captain, for all his hard work in training, was George Martin, playing on the left wing. On the opposite wing was Olan Brown. The Comets started with a 2-2-2 formation. Waiting patiently on the subs bench was EM, HHC, Kian Tipton, and Sonny Jackson, all ready to make an impact when needed.

The game started fairly evenly with the Rams just looking slightly on top. The Comets had to make an early change in midfield due to Theo going to chest the ball and instead took the ball to the face, so on came Kian to partner Harry in midfield. Kian wasn't messing around and was working well with Harry in midfield, winning the ball back numerous times and playing a couple of lovely balls towards the corner flags, which Olan and George were looking to latch onto. Blaine was closing the Rams down well when they were attacking, and John was doing what John does best and was getting stuck in winning every tackle so far.

A Rams attack down the right saw the ball blocked by Blaine giving the Rams a corner. The corner was swung into an area full of bodies, Isaac tried his hardest to claim the ball within the hustle and bustle, but unfortunately it spilled out of his hands and ended up in the back of the Comets goal.

The Comets were a little stunned by the setback as this was the first time in months the Comets had found themselves behind in a game. A few changes were made, and Theo came back on in midfield with EM going into defence, and Sonny now playing left wing. The Comets replied well with plenty of attacks of their own. Olan was causing the Rams all sorts of problems on the right-hand side and putting some dangerous balls across the box, but the Comet's just couldn't get onto the end of it.

It just wasn't falling for the Comets early on and so Sonny and Olan decided that instead of crossing, they were going to take some shots and some great shots they were. Shot after shot, and the Rams keeper looked to be in unbelievable form as he produced save after save, keeping the scoreline in his team’s favour.

The Rams keeper played out from the back, finding his teammate in midfield, who was producing some lovely skill and great dribbling. Theo and Harry couldn't seem to stop the Shelton player as he drifted out wide. Coming in like a bull in a China shop was John from defence who tried to stop him and win the ball but ended up getting his timing wrong and giving away a freekick left side of the Comets box. A lovely strike from the Rams saw the free kick fly into the top right corner of the Comet's goal, putting them two goals to the good now. There was nothing Isaac could have done about that one. It was a fantastic freekick.

The half-time whistle blew, and the Comets were a little stunned to find themselves losing by two goals at half time. The team talk from the coaching staff was quite simple. We weren't good enough and was second to every ball, so we needed to up it and make sure we were better. The communication was poor so far from the Comets, so we wanted them talking to each other more on the pitch and also to believe that we can still win this game.

The Comets took what was said on board and started the second half much better. A change in formation and the Comets now went for a 2-1-2-1 formation, Harry dropped into defence with HHC, Kian and Theo kept swapping in that lone midfield role, Olan was playing right wing and EM was trying the left wing with John now moving up top to play striker.

The changes seemed to work and offered a little more attack upfront with John tirelessly chasing down every ball and testing the Rams keeper a few times, which yet again were saved terrifically. Sonny and George kept swapping to play on the left wing, too, and all of them were chasing down every ball and were tracking back to help the Comets defence when needed.

Kian and Theo were both working hard in midfield when on the pitch but, unfortunately, we were still second to every ball and diving into tackles in the middle of the pitch, which meant that the Rams could attack even more. HHC, Harry, and Blaine were all working hard in defence, but the Rams attack at times was just too good.

Wave after Wave of the Rams attacking and eventually the Comets defence was broken down again when a ball was played into the box for a Rams attacker to tap into the back of the goal. The Comets were down but were still not giving up. It was time to mix it up a little with EM going upfront in a different role again for him, just to give that new lease of life to this match.

With five minutes left the play, the Comets decided to start playing, and it was much better. We were actually getting to the ball first and producing some lovely hold up play in midfield, allowing our wingers to be brought into play and produce some more balls into the box, which once again the Comets just couldn't get on to.

The keeper for the Rams had an excellent game, producing multiple wonderful saves, keeping the Comets from scoring today.

The final whistle blew, and the Comets found themselves losing their first league match of the season.

Within spells throughout the match, the Comets' boys proved they can play great football, listening to the coaching staff and trying their hardest to make it happen on the pitch, but unfortunately, today was just a bad day at the office. Areas were identified for extra focus and training, and the Comets will undoubtedly bounce back and go again stronger next week.

With all that said, credit has to go to Shelton Rams, who put on a great performance that overall deserved the victory on the day. Andy and his team have a lovely balance of players who worked brilliantly together, especially counterattacking and causing lots of worry for us Comets. Once again, their keeper was a beast today and was head and shoulders one of the better keepers we've seen on our travels this season. Good luck for the rest of the season, but rest assured, the Comets will be looking to avenge their loss next time we meet.

Supporters’ player of the match - John Rutherford.

Managers’ player of the match - George Martin.

In what was a fairly average performance from the Comets today, both John and George stood out for their work ethic, which was fantastic. Chasing down every ball and trying to win the ball back for their team. Attacking wise, they both showed some real talent going forward, each coming close to scoring, and will only keep on improving.

Thank you to the Comets kit sponsor Matthew Walker, from the whole of the Comet family.

Priory Celtic FC Girls U12's vs. Heanor Town Diamonds U12's

It was a cold and frosty Sunday morning as the Diamonds made the short journey to Kimberly to face Priory Celtics. The Diamonds were in a confident mood after last week’s convincing away with at Sandiacre.

With just Laya missing due to injury, the Diamonds looked to put in a good performance to continue their winning streak of late. Jodie lined up in goal with a back three of Layla, Kelsey, and Aaliya. Izzy and Kath started on the flanks with Captain, Tammy in a defensive midfield role, and Lois in a more attacking role to support Lucy up top.

The opening five minutes of the first half was cagey from both sides, although the Diamonds seemed to be the stronger side overall with some good early passing moves. Despite this, the Celtics were the first to create the first real chance with a well worked passage of play that forced a brave save from Jodie at close range to keep the scores even.

The Diamonds recovered well and began to dominate possession, keeping their shape and closing down any threats from the Celtics. The pressure almost paid off as Lois latched onto a loose ball and hit a powerful effort that went just wide of the Celtics post.

A switch of tactics saw Cara introduced, who made an immediate impact with some tough tackling, resulting in a throw-in for the Diamonds deep in the Celtics half. Aaliya delivered a fantastic throw-in into the Celtics box with Lucy alert to it to turn the ball into the Celtics net. Breakthrough for the Diamonds!

The goal spurred the Diamonds on as they searched for a second goal before the break, and they thought they had it. Lucy delivered a wonderful curling corner into the box that left the Celtics defence standing and allowed Layla to get on the end of it to scramble the ball home off her shoulder. Initially, it looked to have been given before the ref disallowed it for handball. The second harsh decision in as many weeks for the Diamonds. The Diamonds went into the break well worthy of their lead.

The second half started much like the first with both teams looking to find a rhythm, but the Diamonds once again established a dominance of possession early on.

With just five minutes played, the best moment of the game came from Izzy. She picked up the ball deep into the Celtics half, turned the defender with some neat footwork, and hit a sublime shot from well outside the box that curled over the diving Celtics goalkeeper and hit the back of the net! Goal of the season contender!

The remainder of the half was largely uneventful as the Diamonds dominated possession for the most part but could not capitalise. They were guilty of a little complacently as they found themselves having to defend on the counterattack on several occasions and needed a reminder to stay switched on! The Diamonds had Jodie to thank for doing extremely well to keep the lead at two nil.

The final whistle came, and the Diamonds were deserving of their victory if not a little lucky. The parents awarded Izzy with player of the match due to her outstanding goal and tireless running up and down the wing. The managers player of the match was awarded to Cara who played a part in the first goal and worked her socks off the entire time she was on the pitch despite only having one eye due to a lost contact lens! Well done, Cara.

Two wins from two. Well done again!

With special thanks to Matthew Walker, who proudly sponsor the Diamonds.

Heanor Town Falcons U13's vs. Priory Celtic White U13's

Today saw the Falcons start their Spring campaign. We were at home and welcomed a tough Priory team that we had met in the Winter league, so the Falcons knew it wasn't going to be easy.

We had a full squad available for this one. We started with Frazer Neville in goal, a defensive line of Joshua Benson, Fynn Swift, Riley Dawes and Sam Swift, a midfield of Leo Sinclair, Captain Isaac Martin, Harvey Smith, Joseph Childs, and Alfie Sherwood with Noah Gill leading the line. Impact players we had Nevaan Peiris, KM, Malachi Stoddard, Deacon Costin, and Max Renshaw all raring to go.

The game got going, and the Falcons immediately started on the front foot, moving the ball well. An early corner saw Alfie Sherwood drill the ball low and finding Riley Dawes just outside the box who struck the ball superbly to put the Falcons ahead.

Priory began to grow into the game, but this wasn't about to faze the Falcons who continued their attacks. Another attack and ball in from the Falcons winger found team Captain Isaac on the edge of the box, who calmly slotted the ball through to find Harvey Smith, who doubled the Falcons lead after 11 minutes.

The away side didn't let their head drop and managed to pull a goal back with some slick football of their own, followed by a Falcons handball inside their own box giving the away side a penalty in the space of 5 minutes, which they converted.

The Falcons stood strong and played some fantastic football after letting their lead slip. With Alfie Sherwood grabbing 3 goals in 5 minutes. A hat trick from a huge team effort with two assists from Captain Isaac Martin and one from Malachi Stoddard after a superb one two to rip the defence apart.

Both sides continued to attack, but it was the away side giving themselves some hope and pulling a goal back on the stroke of half time.

The second half was a more equal affair, and both sides had chances. Frazer having to pull off some good saves and the home side defending superbly.

Two goals in the second half went to the Falcons, one being an away side own goal and the other coming from Alfie Sherwood, who ran the away defence ragged all game.

A superb performance from the Falcons, and we are extremely proud of the effort and work the team is putting in for each other.

The parents' player went to Riley Dawes, who has been superb the last two games and has been solid in defence. Also, he grabbed his first goal. Well done, Riley. Keep it going.

The Managers player went to Fynn Swift, who was also solid in defence, made some great tackles, played some great through balls, and has really helped keep the backline since his introduction to the team. Well done, Fynn.

A huge thank you to Wabtec Corporation for sponsoring the team.

Priory Celtic FC Girls U14's vs. Heanor Town Tornados U14's

The Tornados travelled to local opponents Priory Celtic, who had also been relegated from Division 1. So, it was a tough test for the side, especially being their first game in 6 weeks.

Zakulec was in goal with Suess, Jones, Rawson, and Captain Last at the back. Pearson, Franklin, Prince, and Smith were the midfield, and Hull and Johnstone were up top.

The Tornados started by pressing and causing problems whilst remaining strong at the back. Chance after chance came and went, but the ball just wouldn't go into the net. Then Priory Celtic scored against the run of play, but that didn't deter the Tornados who equalised through Johnstone, scoring from Pearsons lovely through ball. Ward then nearly got on the scoresheet, finding herself in a lovely position, but her shot was blocked.

One all at half time, and it was nothing but praise from the coaches with a reminder to stay switched on.

Shields, Goodwin, Collins, and the previously mentioned Ward all came off the bench to do their bit, helping the team stay strong and push forward.

Into the second half and unfortunately, the Tornados didn't switch on from the off and conceded 2 goals, which arguably they should have done better with. Undeterred, they still pushed forward with Hull smashing over when maybe she should have scored and Johnstone going close. Then Johnstone raced through to score a well-deserved second goal for her as her play had merited that.

Priory Celtic, though, then capitalised on tiring legs to score a few more, the pick of the bunch being a superb free kick. The defence of Jones, Suess, Last, and Rawson didn't deserve that at all as they gave everything, but as this season has shown, you don't always get what you deserve in football.

What the game did show, though, was that the Tornados can more than hold their own in Division 2 and with a bit more luck and composure will be the ones celebrating at the final whistle next time.

Players of the match

Layla Prince. Was tasked with marking the dangerous priory forward and was superb in doing just that.

Sienna Rawson. Covered the whole pitch and made some excellent last-ditch tackles.
