Heanor Town switched to a back three as they took on Selston in the First Qualifying Round of the FA Vase, a competition in which they were quarter finalists just two years ago. The extra man in defence enabled the Lions to dominate possession during a one sided first half.

In the opening quarter of an hour, both Sheena and Cheetham found themselves in dangerous positions on the right hand side. However, both crosses were ultimately cleared away by the Parishioners' defence. On 16 minutes, Jack Thatcher then jinked his way along the goalline into the penalty area. He only had an acute angle, though, and his shot was saved by Meehan, in the Selston net.

Jamie Sleigh and Thatcher both had efforts on goal that were blocked and went out for corners. A lot of pressure was applied by the Lions, but clear goal scoring opportunities were rare. Selston had a rare foray upfield on the half hour, as their striker, Batterham struck his shot wide of the target.

Heanor’s biggest chance came just before half time, as they quickly broke away and a cross from the left found Thatcher unmarked at the back post. With Meehan stranded it looked as though the deadlock was broken, but Thatcher just dragged his shot wide.

The second half proved to be more even, as Selston were able to compete for the ball a little more successfully. It became a very competitive encounter with King drawing a save from Meehan on 50 minutes.

Pierrepont made a crucial save with his feet just before the hour mark, as Batterham found himself clean through beyond the Heanor back line. The two sides then began to cancel each other out, with the thought of penalties looming large.

Josh Timson put paid to that with a brilliant moment of individual skill in the 84th minute. He got on the ball 20 yards out from goal and worked himself some space, before arrowing a low shot into the bottom left hand corner - a sublime finish. A goal worthy to win any game and enough to send Heanor through to the next round.
