Ashby Ivanhoe 0-4 Heanor Town

The Lions eased to victory at the NFU Sports Ground as they jumped up to 11th place in the East Midlands Counties League.

Heanor were in control from the first whistle and came close to opening the scoring inside the first ten minutes when Jordan Ball’s flicked header was cleared off the line and then Jake Carlisle headed wide from the rebound.

Jamie Sleigh then teed-up Jesse Vowles, but the winger couldn’t force the Ashby ‘keeper into a save.

The Lions failed to capitalise on this early dominance and were always susceptible to the break. Kerr Horn almost gave the hosts the lead but was denied by a fine save by Wayne White.

This wake-up call was what the Lions needed, and five minutes before half time, Jamie Sleigh gave Heanor the lead. Jesse Vowles found Sam Birks on the right-hand side and his shot was deflected into the path of Sleigh, who kept his cool to sweep home.

Ashby gave the ball away immediately from kick-off and Heanor punished them by doubling the lead. The ball fell to Jordan Ball on the edge of the penalty area before bending his effort into the corner of the net.

The Lions sealed the game two minutes into the second half when Shaun Roulston’s header from the halfway line set Sleigh free, and he slotted past the onrushing ‘keeper for 3-0.

The Lions pushed for a fourth and were nearly rewarded but both Sam Birks and Rob Ritchie-Smith couldn’t find the target.

The final goal did come with fifteen minutes remaining, though. Jesse Vowles spun on the edge of the area before unleashing a left-footed strike beyond the ‘keeper.

Kyle Daley thought he’d added a fifth but was denied by the assistant’s flag before substitute Ben Edgson stung the palms of the Ashby ‘keeper.

It was a thoroughly deserved three points for the Lions and they will look to take this form into Tuesday’s game away at Radford.
