Dunkirk 1-1 Heanor Town

Jack Warner's late goal rescued a point for the Lions in a feisty affair on the opening day of the season.

With both sides feeling their way into the new campaign, Dunkirk were given the chance to open the scoring when referee Daniel Topliss adjudged that Max Thornberry had pushed Lewis Wilcox in the penalty area. Tyrell Shannon-Lewis made no mistake with the spot kick, sending Jordan Pierrepont the wrong way.

The decision seemed to galvanise Dunkirk and it had completely the opposite effect on Heanor. The Lions could've been two-down in the 15th minute, but Shannon-Lewis' powerful effort cannoned off the crossbar. If the striker had shown a little bit more composure he would have been celebrating an early brace.

Midway through the first half, Heanor found their rhythm. After neat build-up play, Sam Birks' shot was spectacularly tipped away by Liam Mitchell in the Dunkirk goal.

The Lions dominated proceedings in the second half, but were unable to find the early breakthrough their pressure deserved. Jamie Sleigh and Birds both saw efforts saved before the returning Nick Hall headed over.

The 56th minute opened a new chapter in the history of Heanor Town Football Club, although I'm not sure its something the club will boast! New signing Reece Horne became the first Lion to take his place in the sin bin - a new Football Association initiative being trialled by non-league clubs - for dissent towards the referee. The binning meant that Heanor would have to play the next ten minutes with ten men.

Eight minutes after this historic moment, there was parity in numbers. Jordan Alls was shown a straight red card for a late challenge on Oliver Pratt. The ensuing confrontation saw Nick Hall and two other Dunkirk players cautioned.

It took until the 88th minute for the Lions to make their breakthrough, and it was a rather fortuitous breakthrough.

After a pinball in the penalty area, the ball broke to debutante Jack Warner on the edge of the area and his heavily deflected shot was too much for Mitchell as he could only palm the ball into the corner of the net.

It was no more than Heanor deserved and they have now extended their unbeaten streak in the East Midlands Counties League to 12 matches.
